This tutorial is for people who are interested in our subbing group but also for anyone who wants to sub videos for their own purpose.
There are multiple ways of doing this, so I’m just going to teach how you how do it with my way. Anyone knows and also contribute to this thread. The way I do it is the most simple and easy way.
First of all you would need to download Subtitle Workshop and Virturaldub. You don’t need to worry about file size for those who have slow internet because both of these files are small size.
Subtitle Workshop: http://www.urusoft.net/downloads.php?lang=1Virturaldub: http://www.virtualdub.org/download.htmlSubtitle Workshop would require you to install while Virturaldub you don’t need to.
So the subbing starts here.First open Subtitle Workshop, then drag and drop the video you want to sub or just to the menu on the top movie > open. But if your video does not play or only has audio it means the video format/encoding is not suitable for this software and you might need to re-convert it using a video converter software.
Once you got the movie you will have to click on File > New subtitle... This will get you started on subbing.
As you can see in the image above, it's pretty simple to use. You just really have to know the start subtitle and end subtitle button.
While playing the movie above you can pause on the start and end of the subtitle. Just under the movie playing area you'll see the start and end time and you enter the subtitle line on the bottom just like how I show on the image. So you just keep repeating that until you finish subbing the video you want.
You will need to get a hang of this as it's pretty hard to get the timing right. I had so much trouble when I subbed the first video where the timing of the subs are slightly off. But then I've discover a way so that my timing are more accurate. The way is pretty simple since most Taiwanese shows have subtitles so I just follow the subtitles on the bottom.
Of course you also do something fancy like changing the colors or underlining etc. but that's not important. There's probably more things you can do with this software but I'm not going to go into depth about it's up to you to explore and have some fun once you understand the basics.
After you're done you will need to save the subtitle file. Click on File > Save as...
Remember this is only saving the subtitle file and not the whole video with subtitle.
After you click on "save as" you'll see a whole lot of file format pops up. Ignore them all for now because I don't even know all the file format. The one that simple to save is .srt which is SubRip.
Double click on "SubRip" and follow the prompts and save it onto you computer. Here your subtitle file is all done like that.
Time to combine the video and subtitle together! As the subtitle function is an external plugin so first of all you need to download this file called "textsub.vdf". You can Google it or simple PM me and I can save you time finding it.
Once you got that file, simply paste that file on the "plugin" folder.
Open Virturaldub once you got that done. Drag and drop the video you're going to combine your subtitle with. Again if the video cannot be opened it means Virturaldub does not support the format/encoding of this video. Therefore you will need to re-convert your video file using a video converter software.
When the video is opened you'll see two screen of the video, the left one is the original of the video and the right one shows whatever you have added.
Firstly you want to add the subtitle, so you go to Video > Fliters...
Click on the button Add...
Scroll until you see "textsub". Click on "OK" and you'll see a prompt says "Textsub settings". Click on the "open" button and file your subtitle file. This is what you will get.
If you wish to format how your subtitle looks like (color, margin, font and size) click on the "styles..." button. You can some fun changing how it looks.
After you're done just click on "ok" and on the "fliters" prompt just click "ok". Once that is done you can start playing the video and you can see that the subtitles have appeared.
If you find that the way the subtitle looks is not what you want then you go back to "fliters" and double click on the subtitle and format it.
You can insert multiple subtitle files here. I do that when I have to explain something and I just position the subtitle on the top.
If you're scared that someone might claim your work as their own you add in a logo on the video.
Just go to Video > Fliters... Scroll down until you find "Logo".
The logo would need to be a image file format (jpeg, png, gif etc). As you might know .png and .gif file the background can be transparent but this does not work here.
To get your background transparent (so that you don't have an ugly box logo on your video) you have check all the boxes and insert the logo image again on the Alpha Image section.
Justification is where you want the logo to be, just select one of the position. And you can fiddle with the X and Y offset if you don't want the logo to stick right on the corner. Click "ok" and "ok".
Now you'll see the logo on the right corner.
After you're all done there's one more important thing you have to do otherwise the file you saved will be very
large which might be 1GB.
To fix that problem you have to click Video > Compression and select "xvid MPEG-4 Codec".
Once that is done just click on "Ok" and then save your video by clicking on File > Save as AVI.
And there you go! You have just hardsubbed a video!
